Syrah Secret de Famille 2016 Paul Jaboulet 13.5%
This is a smart Wine Explorer discovery! I have been lucky enough to secure a small allocation of this fabulous little Jaboulet secret Syrah, mainly because my family have been buying wines from here for about a hundred years. The company was established by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain l’Hermitage in 1834 and has recently been taken over by the Frey family. The soils are a tapestry of clay and limestone from the Rhone Valley and Languedoc. This large Mediterranean area offers an incredible diversity of terroirs, soils and landscapes. This Syrah is a perfect illustration of this complexity. Sunny days with cool nights provide a synthesis of aromas and perfect balance in this concentrated and beautifully balanced fruity wine, crafted from a yield of 45 hectolitres per hectare.
This is where the great northern Rhone winemaking skills of handling the Syrah grape variety meet the ripe generous Southern Rhone grown Syrah and so create a delicious fresh black fruited beauty. This is not a profound terroir driven Syrah but an honest characterful wine that eschews the brown study for the joy of wine. Bright red purple colour, with dark purple reflections. Strong nose, this Syrah shows a real delicacy with aromas of red fruits, cherries, blackcurrants and spice. The attack is concentrated, with bramble, smoky bacon, liquorice and pepper notes. This wine is powerful and pure with penetrating dark fruits, a beautiful structure, ripe chewy tannins and a rustic charm. Hugely appealing and terrific value.
