Meerea Park “Black” Shiraz 2014 13.5% Hunter Valley Australia

Black was meant to be a one off commemorative wine, the thinking being that 2011 was a fantastic Shiraz vintage which coincided with their 20th release. 2014 came along and made the winemaker Rhys Eather reconsider. 2014 just had to produce a “Black”. This is a selection of the best barrels made from two vineyards with a yield of just 35 hectolitres per hectare so the wine has a wonderful concentration of pure fruit, picked from the Black Cluster and Leonard Estate. Matured for 18 months in new and 1 year old French oak. 2014 is being acclaimed as the best Shiraz vintage since 1965. It is certainly the best that Meerea Park has made during the last 24 years. This wine has impeccable balance, a deep garnet bordering on crimson in colour. The nose is dense with apparent black plums, mocha and chocolate aromas. The palate is solidly medium bodied with exceptional length on the finish. The total production of this wine is 2310 numbered bottles. Exceptional and outstanding.
