Gigondas Domaine Longue Toque 2015 15%
93 Points “Sensational notes of blackberries, crushed flowers and provencal herbs. Terrific purity, fine tannin and a big finish.” Jeb Dunnuck
The prestigious Domaine de Longue Toque is nestled in the foothills of the famous Dentelles de Montmirail since 1918. This Jurassic limestone outcrop rises up like jagged horizontal teeth at the top of the hill. I have happy memories of climbing up this beautiful hillside in the sunshine to the summit of one of the individual Dentelles with my father, taking in the magnificent view over the plain from the top, before walking down to taste the wonderful wines of Gabriel Meffre in Gigondas. Sometimes we would have lunch outside on the terrace at Les Florets restaurant further down the hill towards Gigondas, but still high enough to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding vineyards.
60% Grenache and 40% Syrah planted on marl from the cretaceous period covered with limestone scree at over 1000 feet above sea level
Low yields of just over 30 hectolitres per hectolitre and 52 years old Grenache vines deliver a powerful concentrated fine red wine. The grenache is matured separately in vat and demi muid (600 litre). The Syrah in French oak barrels.
This is a youthful regal wine, full of dark berries, warm spices and blackcurrant. It delivers a vinous punch and whilst a distinct pleasure to enjoy now, has the guts to age well over the coming years.
“Sumptuous - a winter treat” Clive Barlow MW
