Cotes du Ventoux 2016 Les Couversets 13.5%
This is a fabulous, fresh, incredibly intense, complex wine, with rich fruit character without being heavy. It is situated on an ancient alluvial terrace with mainly limestone sub-soils. Soil textures are varied (sandy, clay or silty.) I was delighted to secure a small parcel of this wine exclusively for the UK market. Ruby red colour with a red berry nose, redcurrants and raspberries Silky tannins, smooth on the palate with good persistence.
A subtle and rather splendid blend of the great red varieties of the southern Rhone, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes. The Grenache provides the raspberry fruitiness and dark fruits, the Syrah supplies the backbone and structure, the Mourvedre offers nuances of leather and spice and finally the Carignan delivers the cherry fruit and velvety texture. It’s a gorgeous wine at a very good price. This carries a purity of fruit and a more complete and rounded body, way above many Cotes du Rhone. It has the finesse of altitude.
