Chateauneuf du Pape 2011 Domaine Duclaux 15%
Available in wooden boxes of 6 or individually. Planted on pebbly clay and limestone soil. This is a masterpiece. A powerful gem that is drinking perfectly now, having had a few years to mature and is so much finer than the younger infantile vintages of Chateauneuf, so prevalent on the market here in the UK at the moment. Wonderfully ripe, rich fruit held in check by polished smooth tannins. It does show the warmth of the region, with 13 different grape varieties allowed in this blend, it is dominated by 2, Grenache and Mourvedre. Deep garnet red colour, a very fruity nose with concentrated red berries, leather and liquorice. Great complexity and strength on the palate. Excellent persistence. It is finely balanced with a resonant finish and a moreish quality. This is certainly a wine which has reached its plateau, in terms of ageing, but it does have a good life ahead.
My father and I used to buy earlier vintages of this wine together.
