Cape Grace Chardonnay 2017 Margaret River Australia 12%
Cape Grace Wines Margaret River Western Australia
In 1996 Robert and Karen Karri-Davies planted their 15 acres vineyard on the headwaters of the Willyabrup Valley using natural organic biological principles. Cover crops of clover peas and rye grass are grown between the vines. Cape Grace consistently produces exceptional “Single Vineyard Wines” and have received 3 trophies and over 175 medals. In James Halliday’s Australian Companion, in the 2004 edition, Cape Grace was privileged to be included in the “Ten of the Best New Wineries” listing and has currently received a Red 5 star Winery Rating. With a limited annual production of only 2000 cases, the wines are sold primarily at the Cellar Door and mail order. But, I have managed to persuade Karen and Robert to let me have an exclusive small mixed parcel of their wines for the UK market.
The total production of this wine is just 400 dozen bottles.
Very low yield of 2 tonnes to the acre provides the delightful concentration, intensity and character of this outstanding hand-crafted gem. The grapes were picked in the cool of the morning on February 11th 2017. Fermented using natural wild yeast, with 75% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. It has a wonderful purity of expression, matured for 10 months in French oak barrels, 33% of which were new, 33% 1 year old and 33% 2 years old.
An elegant bouquet of jasmine and fresh lime with hints of sea spray, complimented by high notes of brioche and freshly baked bread. A delicate but bright palate, flinty and mineral aspects blend with a richness coupled with fresh lime rind and lemon curd to the fore with white nectarines, peach and ruby grapefruit interwoven in the background. Judicious oak handling has provided a balanced weight and a rich brulée texture that coats the mouth before a fine line of acid takes over to give the wine extraordinarily great length. This is one of my favourite styles of white wine, understated but a wine of sincere pedigree. It is excellent.
