Bourgogne Epineuil 2015 Olivier Savary 12.5%
This is a rarity, a classic “off the beaten track” sort of wine that The Wine Explorer likes to discover. Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, 27 year old vines on clay-limestone soil and this is the very first time I have ever bought Bourgogne Epineuil. Clive Barlow MW and I were bowled over by this gorgeous wine. The yield is only 40 hectolitres per hectare, so the concentration and intensity are top rate but what I love about this wine is the fact that it is light, earthy and subtle but still dense and not heavy. Only 5000 bottles are made each year. I have been allowed a small parcel exclusively for the UK market.
A pretty ruby hue and an inviting nose of dark fruits with plenty of spice and an earthy minerality. There is something of the earthly pleasures on the nose that is intoxicating and appetising. The palate despite the pale colour shows a good freshness and firmness with the same fruits as the nose. This is a wine designed for food no easy sipper more a wine for country dishes and company.
“The nose is delightfully appetising” Clive Barlow MW
